I may be biased but I believe we’re so blessed in the pacific northwest to have seasons that leave no doubt as to the time of the year, and bring such diverse fishing opportunities. The winter Steelhead season is just getting started and if this start is any indication I’m very hopeful we’re in for a strong showing from our anadromous friends.
While fishing for Winter Steelhead is challenging the rewards are great. These fish are just special, entering our rivers chrome bright and full of aggression. The size and power of these fish make those sometimes cool, damp days bearable as we await that much sought after tug. As we prepare for the season ahead, here are a few pointers to keep in mind.
- Start short – Don’t forget to fish the water at your feet
- Cover water – Efficiently work through the run and maximize the time your fly is fishing
- Fish the correct depth – Select the right sink tip to present your fly to the fish. Be sure your fly is slowly swinging through the run.
- Confidence – Have confidence in your fly and set-up
- Let ‘Em Eat – When you do get that grab be sure to feel the weight of the fish before setting the hook to the bank
If your looking to learn some new water it’s always a good idea to hire a guide that’s on the water daily and has intimate knowledge of the watershed and where the fish hold.
Happy New Year and good luck on the water this winter!
