Good byes are always tough, but it’s time to make the spring shift and stow the Winter Steelhead gear for the season. One of my favorite things about guiding is how each season filled with many unique experiences shared with old and new friends. This season was definitely no exception.
We experienced everything from periods of low water, freezing temps, high water and even an extreme (for the Oregon Coast) amount of snow. The fishing followed similar patterns. When conditions were good we found some beautiful fish. During times of low water and cold temperatures it was slow going. Regardless each day was filled with great times and deep connections to the rivers and wildlife we encountered.
Swinging flies for Winter Steelhead can be no easy task. Each of us have our own reasons for choosing to target these amazing fish with a fly, but it usually includes the challenge, reduced impact, and the connection we get when that grab happens. Regardless of your reason, the result when everything aligns, and you get that undeniable grab from a Steelhead is electric!
Thank you to all the friends that came out and fished with me this winter. I’m honored to get to share time in search of these magnificent fish with each of you. I’m wrapping up the season this week and will begin fishing offshore from the Dory, as weather allows, in the next few weeks. If you would like to get in some Dory fishing for Rockfish, Lingcod and Salmon you can view available day’s here.
Look forward to the next time I see you on the water!
