Outlook for 2023 Salmon Season is Looking Great!

Salmon in the Pacific Northwest have been in the headlines for the wrong reason’s recently but the outlook for Coho on the Oregon Coast is looking very good. The challenges facing the Chinook runs of the Sacramento and Klamath basins must be addressed. With years of drought and improper water management these runs face an uphill battle, but with the upcoming removal of the dams on the Klamath there are reasons to be optimistic.

With the extremely low forecast for the Chinook in these areas agencies have been forced to close most of the Chinook runs in Oregon and California. The forecast for Coho however, is extremely good. The forecast is for the 2023 season to be the third consecutive strong return. With this forecast the proposed season, which still needs final ODFW approval, should be better than ’22! The proposed selective season is scheduled to kick off June 17th and run through August. The non-selective season is scheduled to begin September 1st and run through the end of the month or when the quota of 25,000 is filled. You can head to the ODFW offshore page for more details.
