This past summer was nothing short of legendary for Connect Outfitters —in 40 years of fishing out of Pacific City, this was easily one of the top seasons for salmon. Within just minutes of clearing the surf, we are positioned over fertile underwater reefs and active feeding lanes—putting our clients right on top of rockfish, lingcod and migrating salmon. And at the end of the day, coming back to beach offers its own thrill as we ride a ocean swell straight onto the sandy beach.

The peak summer Coho window ran from early July through the closure September 12th, bringing massive schools of hungry, ocean-bright Silvers into the upper water column.
When ocean Coho are feeding near the surface, there is no more dynamic way to target them than with a fly rod:
- Rods & Lines: We relied heavily on single-hand 7- and 8-weight rods paired with everything from floating to fast-sinking lines to present flies precisely in the top five to ten feet of the water column.
- Fly Patterns: Bright pink baitfish patterns were the absolute standout producers. Clouser Minnows, Hollow Flatwings, and custom ocean streamers mimicked abundant forage and triggered aggressive territorial strikes.
- The Take & The Fight: Ocean Coho hit flies with ruthless velocity. Anglers were treated to tail-walking leaps, hard-pumping runs, and energetic double and triple hookups that kept the deck of Vision buzzing with excitement.
These fish were healthy, bright silver, and aggressively feeding on micro-bait, making for fast-paced, high-voltage fly fishing from start to finish.

While Coho were the headliners of the summer, the ocean habitat off Pacific City provided a complete saltwater fly-fishing experience:
- Reef & Surface Action: In addition to the salmon fishing, we had rockfish readily smashing clousers and topwater poppers, and deep reef lingcod provided heavy bends in the rod.
- Whale Watching: The coastal ecosystem was alive with activity. Anglers routinely fished alongside Gray whales and occasionally Orcas as they navigated the coastal waters.
